Virtual Reality Blog

This blog is for the focused discussion of Virtual Reality technology and concepts.  Feel free to engage in discourse about all things related to Virtual Reality.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment with scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. This environment is perceived through a device known as a Virtual Reality headset or helmet. VR allows us to immerse ourselves in video games as if we were one of the characters, learn how to perform heart surgery or improve the quality of sports training to maximise performance.

Although this may seem extremely futuristic, its origins are not as recent as we might think. In fact, many people consider that one of the first Virtual Reality devices was called Sensorama, a machine with a built-in seat that played 3D movies, gave off odours and generated vibrations to make the experience as vivid as possible. The invention dates back as far as the mid-1950s. Subsequent technological and software developments over the following years brought with them a progressive evolution both in devices and in interface design.

Virtual reality (VR), the use of computer modeling and simulation that enables a person to interact with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environment. VR applications immerse the user in a computer-generated environment that simulates reality through the use of interactive devices, which send and receive information and are worn as goggles, headsets, gloves, or body suits. In a typical VR format, a user wearing a helmet with a stereoscopic screen views animated images of a simulated environment. The illusion of “being there” (telepresence) is effected by motion sensors that pick up the user’s movements and adjust the view on the screen accordingly, usually in real time (the instant the user’s movement takes place). Thus, a user can tour a simulated suite of rooms, experiencing changing viewpoints and perspectives that are convincingly related to his own head turnings and steps. Wearing data gloves equipped with force-feedback devices that provide the sensation of touch, the user can even pick up and manipulate objects that he sees in the virtual environment.

I am thinking about doing my Dissertation on virtual reality learning in education.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the most up to date information on VR technology?

Iman,

...congrats on your doctoral program!  Virtual reality is a growing field of technology and is being used in several industries.

Do you have a dissertation committee yet?  I would first check with your dissertation commitee and/or faculty at your school first to seek their expertise and guidance on VR.  I would also check your school's libarary for some peer-evaluated sources on VR.

Additionally, the IEEE has several industry professionals and other students like yourself that are very knowledgeable about VR. Attend some of the VR teleconferences to meet other people as well as reaching out to people in the portal chat if you are not getting enough feedback in your personal chat.

Iman,

The IEEE has quite a comprehensive list of peer-evaluated sources on virtual reality technology.  You can find these sources on virtual reality at the IEEE website at https://www.ieee.org.  The IEEE holds a conference on Virtual Reality every year.  This website address for the IEEE Virtual Reality conference is https://ieeevr.org/.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask.  Additionally, it is highly recommended that you attend one of the IEEE Next-Generation Website Portal teleconferences on Virtual Reality which are located on the calendar at website address https://calendarreborn.com/member/calendar/JaimeReborn.
