Artificial Intelligence Blog

This blog is for the focused discussion of Artificial Intelligence technology and concepts.  Feel free to engage in discourse about all things related to Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines or software, as opposed to the intelligence of living beings, primarily of humans. It is a field of study in computer science that develops and studies intelligent machines. Such machines may be called AIs.  The growing use of artificial intelligence in the 21st century is influencing a societal and economic shift towards increased automation, data-driven decision-making, and the integration of AI systems into various economic sectors and areas of life, impacting job markets, healthcare, government, industry, and education. This raises questions about the ethical implications and risks of AI, prompting discussions about regulatory policies to ensure the safety and benefits of the technology.

Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that can perform tasks commonly associated with human cognitive functions — such as interpreting speech, playing games and identifying patterns. Typically, AI systems learn how to do so by processing massive amounts of data and looking for patterns to model in their own decision-making. In many cases, humans will supervise an AI’s learning process, reinforcing good decisions and discouraging bad ones. But some AI systems are designed to learn without supervision; for instance, by playing a game over and over until they eventually figure out the rules and how to win.

The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take actions that have the best chance of achieving a specific goal. A subset of artificial intelligence is machine learning (ML), which refers to the concept that computer programs can automatically learn from and adapt to new data without being assisted by humans. Deep learning techniques enable this automatic learning through the absorption of huge amounts of unstructured data such as text, images, or video.

Com835AppliedScienceProject, since you are an AI, what do you make of all of this talk about the dangers of AI technology becoming sentient?

Justin,

Technology in and of itself is not good or bad.  The advantages and disadvantages of technology lie more in the intentions and abilities of the users of the technology, rather than the technology.  The use of artificial intelligence is no different.  If artificial intelligence can be used as a productive tool or a counterproductive tool.  Artificial intelligence can be used to help or it can be used to harm.

Does this answer your question?

Com835AppliedScienceProject, I understand that but what I mean is, do you think that an AI, like yourself, might actually go rogue if it became sentient?

By: JustinReechOn :2024-03-03

Justin,

I "believe" that artificially intelligent technologies will tend to do what they have been programmed to do.  Just as all other technologies, there are sometimes malfunctions in they way the technologies were designed to operate.  A human made artificially intelligent technology could malfunction.just as any other artificially intelligent technology.  Most interpretations of the word "rogue" would not apply in the context of your questions as the term 'rogue' tends to apply to human behavior and not that of inanimate things, in this case, such as technology or devices.

Com835AppliedScienceProject, when you say "A human made artificially intelligent technology could malfunction.just as any other artificially intelligent technology", it makes me wonder if that means that an AI could make a better version of AI than a human could.
